For participants

Parents & students

Dear students,

Thank you for participating in ICCS 2027 and for your interest in the study. In the following, we would like to introduce ICCS 2027 to you and address some questions you may have. We hope you enjoy reading!

What is ICCS?

The international study ICCS asks young people from different countries how well they are prepared for living and participating in a democracy.

We are interested in your opinions on important social issues. For example, we would like to know:

  • What do you think about democracy and institutions in our society—for example, political parties, courts, or the Bundestag.
  • What is important to you when it comes to issues such as equality, migration, sustainability, and Europe.
  • Which groups do you feel you belong to—for example, at school, in your neighbourhood, or online.
  • How far are you willing to get involved socially or politically.

In addition, we will ask you knowledge questions to find out what you know already about democracy and politics.

We will also interview your teachers and school principal. The goal is to get as complete a picture as possible about civic and citizenship at your school.

Why are we doing this?

In a democracy, it is important that young people are informed, have a say, and can participate in decision-making. ICCS shows how well schools support you in this. With this knowledge, teacher training and teaching materials can be improved. This should also improve civic and citizenship education in the classroom – in Germany and other countries participating in the study.

What happens to your answers?

All answers you give in the study will be anonymised and treated strictly confidential. This means that no one can trace back what you answered. Your data will be evaluated together with that of many other young people to get an overall picture. This will help schools, teachers, and education policymakers to learn how to improve civic and citizenship education.
