The 30th Conference of Junior Researchers in the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction (JURE in EARLI) took place over the course of one week in early July in the Estonian university city of Tartu. Sophia Jendrzejewski and Till Schröter Draband from the ICCS 2027 team attended the conference. On 8 July, Till Schröter Draband presented current research as part of the session ‘Teacher Agency, Civic Education & Professional Vision’. Entitled ‘Civic learning across Europe: School resources, teachers’ training and efficacy as predictors’, the study uses data from ICCS 2022 to analyse how school factors and teachers’ professional characteristics are associated with civic opportunities to learn. This analysis covers 19 European countries and North Rhine-Westphalia which took part in the survey as a German federal state. The presentation which lasted around 20 minutes was followed by a discussion with the audience during which comments and questions highlighted the interest of other early-career researchers in civic and citizenship education as pressing issues of our time.
On 10 July, as part of a session on ‘Motivation, Emotion and Wellbeing’, Sophia Jendrzejewski presented a poster on her current project entitled ‘What’s Gender got to do with it? Pro-Environmental Orientation and Self-Efficacy in Youth’. Together with Katrin Hahn-Laudenberg and Cristina Greculescu from the Münster-based ICCS 2027 team, she is investigating gender differences in pro-environmental attitudes, expected participation in environmental activities, sustainable behaviour and self-efficacy among youths, using data from 20 European education systems in ICCS 2022. After having presented the poster, Sophia answered the audience’s questions. Finally, open discussions with audience members on the research project concluded the session. Sustainability and education for sustainable development remain at the forefront of educational research, even as topics such as AI are trending.
